The rest of the cake packs enough fat and sugar to pit you into a diabetic coma. This country’s obsession with sugar and fat is reaching dangerous epidemic stages. If we don’t start limiting our over indulgence in these two areas, there won’t be enough hospital rooms to accommodate the fallen. What we get away with eating as children can not be tolerated as adults. Furthermore, even children are contracting juvenile diabetes from their toxic addiction to especially sugar.

Every now and then, I get the urge to redo my kitchen. I look at the cabinets and they seem to be on the brink of being out dated. The fear I have is that as soon as I get them done, some other new style will pop up and I’ll have the same dillemma all over again. My brother-in-law works for these, supposedly state of the art, Manitoba carpenters. I’ll ask him to find out from them what is the next up and coming style, I should be aware of. On the other hand if they are old world type carpenters, they may be the last people I should ask.

My wife thinks I have a serious character flaw. She says that my automatic trust for almost everyone has proven to cause both of us undo grief. After what just occurred, I have no grounds to dispute her. I hired this small construction company to add an office to my home. The job required some rather articulate aspects involving desks and shelving. They told me they had experience in this area and they would do a great job. Well let me tell you, these were not like the Manitoba carpenters that built a phenominal office at my wife’s aunt’s home in BC. I am reminded at least three times a day that our office looks more like a garage than the masterpiece up north.

If there is one thing you should never do, it is messing around with unknown substances. Thousands of people each year are harmed by chemical mixing. Why in the world they would get into handling stuff they know nothing about is beyond me. They may even cause an environmental hazard and harm others when they act so carelessly. I am no chemist, but I have read enough stories and seen enough movies to realize how dangerous chemicals can be. I have seen some people look at warnings regarding hazardous substances in their workplaces and totally ignore them.

I don’t know about you but I, in a silly sort of way, get all excited to see what choices people make regarding their wedding decorations. Whatever they choose will make an indelible mark in their minds forever. They spend a bunch of money and time selecting the theme and the materials and in only a few hours its all over. Even though the decorations are short lived, they remain an extremely important part of the beginning of the most important journey of their lives. It reminds me of a bottle of fine wine. All the labor and time it takes to produce it and the bottle is consumed in minutes once it’s opened.

If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t believe it. My adventurous four year old nephew imagines himself as a leading celebrity. He takes every opprtunity to show his stuff at all family gatherings. It was no shock to watch him jump up on the bandstand at his aunt’s wedding reception. He really is sort of a prodigy. His aunt, my sister, had him look at about fifty different wedding cake toppers and select one for her cake. He did this because he wanted to dress like the groom on the cake and sing a song he actually composed for her wedding. Even for him, it was one of the most creative things I had ever seen.

I have been preaching for years that each and every one of us should learn to perform the Heimlich maneuver. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to find out that through the years, more than a million lives have been saved by use of this wonderful technique. Three weeks ago I was at one of those multi-room reception halls. I was attending a retirement party for a co-worker. I heard this disturbance coming from the wedding going on in the next room. As it turned out a little two year old girl was choking on one of the wedding decorations. I ran into the room and what I saw was incredible. A young boy scout who had been taught the maneuver a week earlier was applying it and saved the toddler. What a blessing.
